I don’t know if I’m to die today

I don’t know if I’m to die today
Said the prisoner to himself
Every day is a blessing
But with it comes the curse

They haven’t come for me yet
I have today to myself
I can put aside my terror
And continue to live a little longer

He began to write a letter
To his wife that lived outside the gates
He began to remember his dream
That he hoped would come true

The pardon may arrive today
Instead of the sentence of death
I will step out of the prison he said
Into paradise in the town below
