When a child
Sees no fire
In the grate
He turns
To the shadows
On the wall
And wonders
Which one
Am i
When a child
Is lost in the hills
And the night
Climbs out
Of its cave
He listens
To the voice
In his head
And wonders
Who am i
When a child
Is lost
On a train
With no label
He opens
A mysterious door
In his mind
And thinks
Where am i
I could not find anything more relevant to some moments of life. The poem in itself is drenched in emotions and feelings and God, is it beautifully penned.

This is so methaphysical (to say it somehow). I like it. It makes me wonder.

What do you wonder I wonder?

Well, it makes me wonder who the child is or might be, and what exactly is his/her attitude in all three situations. Is it a him or a her? I like the first of them particularly. So, there’s no fire, but there are still shadows on the wall (resonating Plato), and then the child is wise enough to wonder and think one of those shadows “must be me”. There’s a seek of identity. The more I read, the more I care to understand what really is going on there. You might have written this unaware of its complexity (like you said in another comment, another “zanny” thing), but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Sorry, I didn’t mean to extend the comment so much 🙂

Thank you, that’s an amazing insight. all three verses are my own experience; in the fifties, in a council house with a coal fire lit on a grate. Shadows on the wall could be there from a number of causes that I can remember. Going out to play in the hills; I have bad eyesight and I often felt lost, once feeling very alone on a train aged about 5 because I couldn’t see properly. I remember asking perhaps unconsciously these kinds of questions but of course, there were no answers.

Thank you for telling me the story behind. I guess I went too far in suppositions. I still think it sounds quite metaphysical, now with the story and all. I like it, really. Thank you :))
