You just had to go to Cardiff

You cut your wrist
On a metal spike
You felt white with sickness
Your head reeled

Then bravery set in
And you marched away
To the first aid room

There and then
The nurse
Stitched up the hole
In the wrist
And you went home

The weekend came
And the wound
Opened up
And you felt nauseous

But you had to go
You just had to go
To Cardiff

You hitch hiked with our friend
Feeling guilty
You were not going to work
Like you should be

The cut wrist
Counted for nothing
No one talked
About the incident
Of the thunderous press factory

Where the punch lifted
And left a sheet of metal
Like snakes teeth
On the flat bed

But you had to go
You just had to go
To Cardiff

So you met your friends
With your bandaged wrist
And your feeling sick
And your feeling sorry

And you hitchhiked to Cardiff
And you got to Cardiff
Where the salt water air
Disorientated you
And Cardiff castle
Overwhelmed you

But she wasn’t there
Never mind said the salt air
Never mind said the seagulls
Never mind said Cardiff
Laughing at you
With you pale face
And your cur wrist
And your anxiety
And your failure

But you had to go
You just had to go
To Cardiff
