I can’t fully explain the English

I can’t fully explain
the English to you
it’s difficult to explain
what shaped them

the break with the pope
the beheading of a king
Cromwell’s revolution
the empire
the industrial revolution
the two world wars

it all took ordinary men
from their working lives
and put them into the infantry
century after century of conflict
has left a deep depression
the barrack room behaviour of everyday life

square bashing is in their souls
in wars right across the world
right across the centuries
they have been there

or put into factories
on a massive scale
to build railways and fleets of ships

going home to poor houses
going home to ragged families
drinking, church and smoke
