The universe has no empathy

I almost died
Of heartbreak
Right in the seat
Next to you

I reached up
For the invisible wreath
Above my head
But couldn’t get a grip

I saw an overflow
Of the river bank
A cool flood of sorrow
Grow wings and fly away

In real time I was
A comical character
With four spidery arms
Waving about in the wind

You were
Someone in a ticket booth
To a carnival show
Watching an aboriginal boy
Go bonkers
At not being allowed into
A whites only show

You petted the cat
And whispered to it
Nonsense and sweet nothings
while I contemplated
The failure of the universe

The universe has no empathy
The sun does not care
The stars do no feel sad
And all the poets go mad

  1. My goodness, I have never related with anything as much as I did with the last four lines here. Almost found myself nodding along while reading, like saying, yes yes yes! 💜
