The silent country

The silent country
Of the status quo
Don’t rock the boat
Be slow
Be nothing
Let them take over
Let them be your voice
Don’t be angry
Don’t get angry at all
Be quiet
Keep to yourself
Hold your ground
Fend off neighbours
Fend off religion
Fend off politics
Youth: grind it down
Sit on a bench
In the high street
Where the shops are shut
You never got to know
The shopkeepers anyway
Sit in the high-street
On a bench
Keep your own council
Keep your opinions to yourself
Run-away scared
When asked about the country
That you live in
The silent country
The silent majority
Silent not because of
Military control
Dictatorship
Silent because
You wait for others
To do what they think is best
This slow destruction
This slow grinding wheel
Of what others think is best
Is losing what you won in the past
Complacency is destroying you
Like a sow Dutch elm disease
In your council offices
They grow bigger
You grow smaller
They get more brazen
You get more timid
You’ve been listening to them
For too long
They have you
Where they want you
Turn on the cold water
The cold, cold water
Of this silent country
Maybe you don’t remember
The old ways
The post war days
The fog, the smog
The six-foot snow drifts
The living death
Of the council estates
Of this silent country
The condescending government
In its pin stripe suit
And bower hat
As it walked down
Our roads
Our streets
With arrogance
And a deaf-ear to the poorest
Maybe you prefer
To overlook it now
Maybe you prefer
To believe in what they tell you
Maybe you believe
They know what’s best
They have it easy
They have a silent country
Where people sit on benches
In the high street
And speak
Without conviction
To leave it up to them
They’ll sort it out
They are digging a pit for you
To fall into
It’s been years
Of quiet subjugation
A blanketing
Of the quiet country
A promising of
We’ll get it right
We know how it works
Better than you
Sitting on your bench
In the high street
As the sops close
One by one
And the cars stop running
And he rents go up
And the world goes to ruin
